The contains papers relating to Asia from the files of Joseph Owen Zurhellen, Jr. (1920-1990). The collection focuses mainly on his occupation as a Marine Corps Intelligence Officer during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, from 1942 to 1946. In addition, the collection includes papers from his time at the US Navy Japanese Language School at the University of Colorado at Boulder and as well as his return trips to Japan in decades following the war. He married Helen Audrey Millar on December 19, 1942, and graduated from Columbia University the following year. He entered the Japanese Language School in Boulder, Colorado in 1942, and graduated the following year.
